Really! Be Anxious For Nothing

Filed under: Christian Life — Stan @ 3:34 am

When you read the Bible, do you read it, or do you really read it? What I mean is, do you read it like a novel or story, or do you read it word by word and line by line? There are times when it is good to just sit down in a nice cosy chair, and with a nice warm or cold drink and read page after page of God’s dealings with His people, or how He wants to direct and instruct us through the examples of stories and letters written so many years ago, yet so relevant today. I like to do that quite often, but sometimes I have found it very hard to get past one word or a particular verse. Do you know what I mean? It’s at times like this that God often speaks to us through His Word, to instruct and direct our paths, to give us insight into areas of our lives that require guidance. Have you noticed that it is dependant on our reactions and response how God can use those instances to impart truth and direction into our lives. I got struck on a couple of verses as I was sitting down preparing for a Sunday service, maybe we can go through them together to see if they can help you as they have helped me.

We’ve all heard and read these verses before I am sure; Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

When you think about it, these are pretty powerful words; awesome would probably be a more accurate description. There are times in each of our lives when it is not easy to not be anxious about something, after all we are only human! However, it never ceases to amaze me that when God says something He means it! So, if God’s Word says “be anxious for nothing” and nothing means, not anything, the absence of anything perceptible, zero, nought, nil; let’s pull out all the stops, so to speak, and stand on the Rock for as long as is necessary and see the results that God sees. An overcoming, more than conquering, faith talking, faith walking, Bible believing Christian. Let’s start looking at circumstances like God does. If we do, we can begin to understand why God says “be anxious for nothing.”

Abiding

Abiding

Have you ever thought much about words and there meanings? It’s worth a look to see the real depth that God places on words in His Bible, the book of life.

Let’s look at the word Abide. The adjective of Abide is Abiding, which has a permanent aspect to it. Abide means to accept or submit to, to comply or remain faithful, to abide by your promise. It means to remain or continue. Abide is somewhat of an archaic word which has probably lost the significance of meaning in our day and age. If we look at scripture and see this word Abide we can be certain that its main requirement for us is to dwell and remain in the area it is relating to, and for good reason.

I came across this word Abide recently in the Gospel of John, chapter 8:31. Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you ABIDE in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. Verse 32 says, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”. The only way to find true freedom in this world is through Jesus and His Word. Why not make a quality decision to start ABIDING in His Word and find out what freedom really is.

Vision

Nehemiah was a man of vision. He could see the walls of the great city again standing tall, rebuilt and made strong. And yet, to translate this vision into reality took great courage.

True courage is sometimes being able to go beyond that which is required regardless of the pain or temporal suffering or loss, to see the vision become real.

Nehemiah was a man who overcame many obstacles. Depression, the discontent of the people, and conspiracy against himself, (Sanballat, a picture of satan). And yet through it all Nehemiah was true to the vision God gave him of a rebuilt city wall. We too can experience times like Nehemiah, (depression, discontent towards us, attacks of satan) but like Nehemiah we need to keep our eyes on the vision God has given us, either as individuals or corporately. If we don’t have a clear vision, we need to follow Habakukk’s example of going to a quiet place “to see what the Lord will say to me.” Do you seek clues from God for the direction in your life?

We don’t have to be concerned about seeking clues to God’s direction in our live! If we spend time in His Word, He will give us the answers we need.

Know the truth, and the truth shall make you FREE.

Filed under: Christian Life — Stan @ 1:19 am

Know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Men and women world wide desire to be free! Many people especially in the western world have heard about Jesus and even read portions of the Bible. And yet are still not free. But the Bible says “The truth shall make you free!” The fact is the ‘truth’ does not make one free!! The Bible does contains the truth, and many people read the Word, but are still not free. Why?

It’s not the truth that sets one free, it’s knowing the truth that sets you free. That’s what makes the difference. The Bible says to “know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”. The word “know” in the Greek is more clearly expressed, be aware, feel, perceive, be resolved, be sure, understand. That’s what we need to do to know the truth.

Everything that Jesus said was ‘truth’ – but not all believed.

As Jesus instituted the Lord’s supper, He said to “do these things in remembrance of me”. When we remember we dwell on those things. We need to dwell on the things that Jesus did and said and absorb and meditate on His Word, and then, the truth you know will make you free!!

Helping Create a World of Difference

Thoughts Towards God by Stan Sykes

A weekly thought to help you on your way…

Introduction

Have you ever just sat and pondered the wonders of God and His creation? Do you ever just come to a point in your day that all you can think about is the glorious and magnificent Saviour that we serve? What about the work of the cross? What does it really mean to us? What about faith, how high or deep can it go? Do we have a destiny, a path that God has planned that we can run on? What about vision, can we really soar like an eagle? Can we be so firmly planted in God that we are immovable? These kind of thoughts and many more have passed through my mind many times over the years. Some I have found plenty of answers to, while others the search continues with an impelling force that God alone can give.

Thoughts Toward God is not a devotional work, but written with the hope that while reading one would become more devotional toward God and His Word. Thoughts Toward God is not a Bible study, but again written with the hope that one would become more studious in looking through the Word that brings life, true life. Thoughts Toward God is not a prayer book, but written hoping to bring people before the Lord in prayer. Thoughts Toward God is a selection of the authors thoughts, uncomplicated insights, illustrations and some portions of messages shared by and with others. I hope that they will be of some value to you has they still are to me.

Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established. Proverbs 16:3 Search me O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts. Psalm 139:23

Know My Thoughts

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

To really understand this scripture and to allow our Lord God to search us, and try us, truly opens our lives to the way everlasting. Asking God to search us, means giving Him the privilege to enter into the inner most part of our lives. To know our hearts just like we know it. To hide no secrets or hold back in any way to God’s probing. Can we truly be so honest with ourselves to let this happen? Can we be so prepared for God’s correction and direction? The amazing thing is that God already knows our heart and the thoughts that we think. However, God will never violate our thoughts or the intent of the heart except by invitation. In asking God to go ahead and search us, try us to see if there is any wicked way in us, acknowledges God’s sovereignty in our lives. We can now allow God to do that perfect work in us and lead us in that way everlasting. To experience God’s best we need to give Him our all. Giving Him our all, means to relinquish self, dethrone it, and give way to the God who is all knowing. Maybe you, like me have held back for so long in allowing God total access to the throne of our hearts. Maybe you, just like me are now ready to pray, search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Thy thoughts are vocal to God. John Flavel.
